Redesigning My Office with Intention

Wowowow I am so excited to share this little behind-the-scenes office makeover with you today. Recently, there have been a lot of changes happening in my life, including a new career path and exciting projects to work on. And with that came the need for me to have a home office specifically designed for my work needs.

The Vision

As a creative, my main focus in redesigning this room was to create an atmosphere that would inspire me. Something that would match my personality while triggering my creative juices to flow.

I don’t know about you, but there is nothing more uninspiring than a dull workspace. And when your job requires you to consistently generate creative ideas for the company, ya girl doesn’t have time to be uninspired.

Yes, creativity is something that comes and goes. (Oh how I wish I could always “turn it on” whenever it was time to work.) But, there are little hacks I can do to get myself into that creative mindset. Being in a room that makes me feel happy and energized is one of them.

Below are some pictures and links to products in case you’re thinking about sprucing up your home and borrowing some ideas here! The vibe I went for was a natural boho theme with various textures for an added flair.

The wall color is Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore. Unfortunately, this room doesn’t get any direct sunlight, so I wanted something light and bright without giving me that hospital/sterile feeling of pure white because, wellllll, I spend enough time there already. 😂 Plus, the name of this wall paint was so perfectly on brand for me not to use it.

The behind-the-scenes, dot your I’s, cross your T’s kind of stuff

What you are seeing today is a completed look of something that took a few months to come together. This was challenging for me because I love efficiency. I want to get everything done in one shot and not have to look back. But, I knew going into this that if I wanted this room to truly spark the most joy, I was going to have to have patience.

Intention was the name of the game for this room. Everything in my office was carefully picked and budgeted before actually purchasing everything. To be quite honest, I’ve had my heart set on giving this room a makeover for a few years now. But, I didn’t want to hastily go out and buy random odds and ends while on a tight budget. I wanted to design this room intentionally *and* when I had the financial freedom to do so.

Approaching the journey in this manner and actually taking the time to curate a space that was not only meticulously planned but comfortably within my financial means was the secret sauce to curating a space I now love.

Ooook! Now here’s the final reveal.

Updating a classic white desk

I’ve had this desk for a few years, and it’s in perfect condition. So, instead of buying something new, I decided to customize the look. I bought peel-and-stick wallpaper from Target and covered the surface of the desk with it. Then, I switched out the knobs to match the boho aesthetic I was aiming for. I am a DIY QUEEN and truly believe in repurposing furniture. Now this piece is a one-of-a-kind item.

The statement sofa

This sofa was giving me modern day Friends vibes. I could definitely picture it in a revamped Central Perk where Ross and Rachel are still arguing over whether or not they were on a break. For that, I had to buy this for the office. But, with the natural look I was going for, I also needed to add a statement piece. Something that stood out from the rest and added some character to the room. I’m not a huge pink person, but I fell in love with this vintage-y look. When this was added to the room, I felt things really starting to come together.

From drab to fab

Speaking of DIY, here’s the next customized piece in the room. Between the nonprofit organization, my art shop, and general work stuff I need a loooot of space. Without dropping hundreds of dollars on a fancy storage unit, I decided to give this cube organizer a mini facelift. I bought the piece from Target, and then got a wooden board,  wooden legs, and wood stain from Home Depot. My brother (begrudgingly) put this together for me and did an amazing job with it. I have to laugh because I get all these crazy DIY ideas but can’t actually execute them because of my physical disability. So my family ends up doing the brunt of the work while I just shoot out outrageous creative ideas. I don’t know how they put up with me. Love ya fam!

My workspace on wheels

The cart on the left is basically my shop on wheels. I have storage for inventory elsewhere, but this storage cart is where I print my artwork and cut out stickers with my Cricut machine. Next to it is the best file cabinet ever. There is so much room in the bad boy that it really allowed me to have less clutter out in the open. Above is a simple shelving unit for some decor.

Completing the look

And, finally to complete the look and feel of the entire room is this gooorgeous pendant shade. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know it took some convincing to get permission from my mom to buy a new light fixture. She loved the original one, but it was kind of a sore thumb in this newly decorated room. Somehow, I not only received her blessing to swap it out but also gained her approval when it was up?! Win. This was the last thing I added to the room, and it really tied everything together.

There you have it, folks. My new work digs that I am absolutely in love with. Most mornings I come in here, put on my essential oils diffuser, do my Bible devotional, then turn on some tunes and get to work. I’m still looking for some wall decor and maybe even a small rug to make the space a bit more homey. But, going back to designing with intention, I’m taking my sweet time in choosing. Plus it’ll soon be time for me to decorate for Christmas, and that’ll require my undivided attention. 😉
